I was a law student in New York City at that time. On playoff game day, I wore a white pullover with CINCINNATI emblazoned across the front in large letters and top it off with a red Cincinnati Reds hat. I rode the Staten Island Ferry that morning and got hundreds of disapproving looks. I walked into class and friends who had enjoyed many, many beers with me....BOOED ME !!! : ) And, then came.....frickin Al Leiter.....The next year, Kenyon Martin breaks his leg to end our best chance at a National Championship. Meanwhile, in the three years I lived in NYC....the Yankees won 3 World Series, one of which was a Subway Series against the Mets. The Knicks went to the NBA finals, losing to the Spurs. The Giants won a Super Bowl. Even the New Jersey Devils won a Stanley Cup. Me.....I'm still bragging about a home run Eric Davis hit when I was a college freshman. I'm now 50....and I'm married to a New Yorker I met in law school....who NEVER stops bragging about being a New Yorker. There is no god...

Ouch! I was actually a law student in DC at the time, so my Reds cap didn't get as many disapproving looks. But I feel your pain. We've been through a lot of disappointments since that Eric Davis home run.

If I recall correctly, the playoff game was played on Oct 4. My birthday. I was a senior in HS and recall following the 1999 team religiously. Was devastated when they lost to Al Leiter.
